Discover the hidden gem of crete's east coast
Crete, Greece's largest island, is a top destination for a quick European getaway without breaking the bank. While Chania remains the ever-popular spot, the east coast offers a serene alternative yet to be overrun with tourists.
A sister's getaway to restore and reset
I embarked on the trip with my sister as summer wound down, seeking a perfect sister escape to unwind after a chaotic month.
We stayed at the Zeus Eleva Mirabello Bay, a stunning hotel that worked beautifully for both of us, though it's also well-suited for larger families. The property boasts 343 rooms, suites, bungalows, and villas, some featuring private pools ideal for relaxing solo with a good book. I adored this feature, though the pool linked to our apartment was downstairs and shaded during the day.
The main pool, however, was a highlight, offering comfortable beds and luxe loungers in a calm yet buzzy atmosphere. Plus, it didn't feel like a battle to reserve a lounger, a welcome respite. The swim-up bar was a big hit, serving not only great cocktails but also refreshing iced coffees that kept us swimming back for more.
If lounging by the pool isn't your thing, the hotel also features two private beaches for relaxation. Dining options include five restaurants, with our favorite being Mezedaki, the hotel's traditional Greek grill restaurant right on the beach. The seafood was incredible, and they catered well to my sister's vegetarian needs.
As a beauty journalist, I always prioritize spa treatments at resorts. The Mirabello Spa is excellent, offering a range of face and body treatments to elevate your stay or provide much-needed calm after a family vacation. Even if you don't indulge in a treatment, the spa features an indoor heated pool and jacuzzi for some quiet relaxation.
We also enjoyed the tennis courts, easily booked through the hotel's reception. For water sports enthusiasts, the property offers a range of activities, including snorkeling and diving (braver than me!), as well as a huge on-site water park for kids of all ages.
A 2-person Deluxe Room with Garden View at the Zeus Eleva Mirabello Bay starts at £151 per night, including breakfast. For more information, click here.

Exploring the local area
The hotel's location is a major plus, nestled near bars, restaurants, and scenic walking routes, with a beautiful beach right at your doorstep.
We embarked on a boat trip to Spinalonga Island, a fascinating destination with a haunting history as one of Europe's last leper colonies. The island's abandoned houses still stand, offering a poignant glimpse into the past. We did a self-guided tour after the scenic boat ride, which was both educational and captivating.
A visit to the charming town of Agios Nikolaos is also a must. While quiet, it boasts a variety of little tavernas and shops to stock up on postcards, ceramics, and sweet treats. We even took a guided tour to explore the surrounding villages and the peaceful Monastery of Kremast, complete with a lovely gift shop.
