Ear seeds: the ancient wellness trend that’s taking over

A small sticker on the ear? It sounds almost too simple to be true. Yet, a quiet wellness trend is gaining serious traction, with ear seeds – tiny acupressure seeds applied to specific points on the ear – becoming a viral sensation. From combating headaches to easing jet lag, people are reporting surprising results.

Beyond acupuncture: how ear seeds are gaining popularity

The practice isn’t new; ear seeding has roots in traditional Chinese medicine, where the ear is viewed as a microcosm of the entire body. Acupressure, the technique of applying pressure to specific points, has been utilized for millennia to regulate energy flow, or qi. When qi becomes blocked, physical ailments like headaches can manifest.

“Acupressure can help to unblock the flow of this energy,” explains Gudrun Snyder, LAc, a doctor of acupuncture at Moon Rabbit Acupuncture. She created at-home kits because she found the practice invaluable for her patients. The ear’s thin skin makes it ideal for stimulating nerves, and various points correspond to different areas of the body – the brain, neck, and even the digestive system.

Dr. Nicole Glathe, DAOM, LAc, Head of Product Development at WTHN, attributes the recent surge in ear seed popularity to their proven benefits. “Ear seeds have been around for thousands of years because of their proven benefits, so it’s been incredible to watch ear seeds go viral this year,” she says. While traditional Vaccaria seeds are commonly used, crystal ear seeds, like those from Nao Wellness, are also gaining traction for their pressure-point properties. The placement isn’t precise; being in the general area is often enough to stimulate the intended point.

The results are varied. I’ve experimented with ear seeding myself, using it as a quick fix for writing deadlines and jet lag. Editors at the Vogue office have also tested the practice for a range of issues, from migraines to TMJ, with some reporting noticeable relief. Dr. Jancic recommends taking a break from the seeds every few days to allow the points to re-sensitize. For many, it’s a gentler alternative to over-the-counter pain relief.

The growing interest is more than just a fleeting trend. It speaks to a broader desire for accessible, holistic wellness solutions. The trend's ubiquity isn't accidental. The ease of use—simply applying the seeds—coupled with demonstrable results, has resonated with a population seeking self-care options. The democratization of ancient practices is here.
