Gray hair gains ground: l’oreal’s ‘french blending’ technique redefines silver styles
The way we’re embracing our grays is a quiet revolution, and a new technique is fueling the movement. Forget harsh coverage – French blending, courtesy of L’Oreal Professionnel, is the chic, low-maintenance secret to seamless silver.
A personalized approach to gray transformation
This bespoke color application method, championed by ambassador Krista Bartik, moves beyond simply masking gray roots. Instead, it strategically integrates them into the overall shade, creating a softer, more dimensional effect. “It’s much softer and more modern,” Bartik explains to Vogue, “Instead of covering grays, we blend them into the overall color using depth and dimension.”
The process isn’t one-size-fits-all. L’Oreal offers three distinct ‘French blending’ styles – first blending, retouch blending, and total blending – each tailored to the density of gray hair. First blending adds subtle lowlights and carefully placed gray clusters, ideal for those just beginning their gray journey. Retouch blending focuses on maintaining that blended look, softening regrowth and adding luminosity to lengths and ends. Total blending, however, provides the most dramatic result, combining balayage and other techniques for a diffused, natural finish.

Texture matters: a tailored technique
Colorist Kadi Lee, founder of Highbrow Hippie, emphasizes that French blending’s success isn’t solely dependent on hair texture. “Colorists usually have their own systems when approaching these methods to a client’s specific hair needs,” she notes. “But generally, French blending works for all hair textures.” The key, she explains, lies in adapting the application – the formula, sectioning, and saturation – to the individual hair’s characteristics. For fine, straight hair, Perry advocates for extremely delicate highlights to avoid harsh lines. Wavy hair, conversely, benefits from the natural movement, allowing for effortless color blending. And for naturally curly and coily hair, Lee leverages the inherent dimension of the curls to minimize the need for precise placement.

Expert insights: maintaining your silver shade
Maintaining gray hair, whether naturally blended or treated, requires a specific approach. “It tends to be drier, coarser, and more prone to yellowing,” explains Lee. Regular gloss treatments are essential, alongside nourishing products like the Highbrow Hippie Instant Silk Vitality Mask. L’Oreal Professionnel’s Metal Detox Hair Mask also helps combat color fading. Perry recommends Olaplex bond-building treatments and the Hydrating Mask for ongoing upkeep, alongside occasional violet shampoos to maintain brightness. Ultimately, trusting your colorist is paramount; they can guide you towards either the subtle grace of general gray blending or the elevated artistry of French blending.
Jenna Perry, celebrity colorist, emphasizes that the best approach depends on the desired effect. “For something soft and low-maintenance, general gray blending works. But for something more elevated, French blending may be the move.”
